Obituary of Betty Y. O'Hara
Betty Yvonne Hubbard O’Hara died peacefully on May 27, 2022 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville, NY. Born February 17, 1929 in Flat Creek, she enjoyed 93 wonderful and blessed years. She graduated from Gilboa-Conesville Central School in 1946 and married Thomas J. O’Hara on June 6, 1948. Together, Tom and Betty owned and operated O’Hara’s Service Station for over 50 years. She is survived by their four children: Michael (Nancy), Mary, Ann and Erin (Steve); grandchildren: Kipp & Kory, Shannon & Ryan, Chad & Caitlin, step-grandchildren Dawn & Russ; great-grandchildren: Dalton, Michael & Shane and Carli. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and dear friend, Dottie Pickett.
She is predeceased by her husband Tom, her parents, Merel and Ella (Briggs) Hubbard and brother Merel Hubbard, Jr.
Through Betty’s long life, she was an active member of the mountain top community, especially her beloved Prattsville. Her volunteer efforts spanned the PTA, talent shows at GCS, the Ladies Auxiliary and Prattsville Fire Hall events, the Rosary & Altar Society of St. Philip Neri, the Prattsville Recreational Committee, the Greene County Historical Society and the Zadock Pratt Museum, eventually becoming President and President Emeritus. Because of her tireless efforts, many local homes and buildings have been referenced in publications and listed on the Greene County Historic Register. This includes her own home, which was also listed on the National Historic Register in 2012. She loved her town and its rich history with all her heart.
Betty was also an active member of the Schoharie Valley cloggers and would dance away the hours with energy and passion. As a pastime, she liked nothing more than sitting on her front porch and chatting with neighbors and long drives through the mountains. She would marvel with delight when they would return to life in the spring and roar with color in the fall. She was a friend to many and will be missed deeply.
We are grateful to the kind and compassionate staff at Mountainside for excellent care these past four years.
The family welcomes donations to the Zadock Pratt Museum in lieu of flowers. Visitation hours: 5:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, June 9 at Decker Funeral Home and Catholic Mass at 1:00 on Friday, June 10th at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, both in Windham.
May her spirit live on in all of us.
