Susumu was a kind man with a gift for photographic artistry, but I knew him for his love and art of botany. Susumu would carefully grow heirloom tomatoes from the tiniest of seeds and cultivate these tender plants into tomato "trees". He shared with our family his prized seedlings and during the summer he would come over and check on their progress. He was always excited to see them grow, and during harvest we would swap our home-grown produce and share recipes.
He was so knowledgeable, and he was so kind. His smile would make us all smile and his sense of place within our family leaves a void. Our harvest this year was bountiful; but barren without our "Sato". You are missed, our dear friend... but not forgotten. We planted this year with you in our thoughts, and harvested this year with you in our hearts. The seeds of your gifting continues to grow and produce smiles, and enjoyment to all who delight in our kitchen-gardens.

Dawn and I are truly sorry to hear about the passing of Susumu. Even though we never met him in person, the personal tour you gave us of your collected memories was enough to understand the true love you both HAVE for each other. We understand this is a difficult time for you, but the memories and love you have, last for eternity. We long for the physical contact, but it is the spiritual connection that we take with us and never diminishes. May you find peace in knowing that you both are true lovers forever, and nothing, or no one, can ever take that away from you.

My sincere condolences go out to my dear friend Rebecca and family. I’m so sorry for your loss. It goes without saying…Susumu was an amazingly creative and gifted man. I was lucky enough to have the privilege of seeing his photography first hand at his studio many times and will forever cherish the farm-to-table lunch Susumu specially prepared just for me. He always welcomed me into his home even if I stopped by on short notice and it always felt like I had the red carpet treatment whenever I was there. Something tells me everyone that visited felt the exact same way…a testament to his kind and giving nature. I will continue to keep you both in my prayers. The world is a better place for having had Susumu in it. His spirit will forever live on through his incredibly talented photography that is displayed across the world for all to see. My thoughts are with you…Tim.

My wife and I came to windam 10 years ago trying to find peace after a loss of our own . We stayed with Susumo and Rebecca at their B&B. Upon meeting them we were asked why we had traveled so far ( 800 miles from Tennessee ) , we found ourselves pouring out emotions to at this point complete strangers. It was as though we had known them our whole life. We were invited into their own living area and we talked until 2 am. We came to run away from our own sorrow of losing our son and found instead comfort and compassion from these two wonderful people. When we left Susumo gave us as a gift a couple of his autographed snowscape photos ,which we have framed in our home and cherish. Susumo will be greatly missed by us and Rebecca you are in our thoughts constantly. May God have his hand on you Rebecca because I know he does on Susumo.
With Heartfelt condolences and love

Johnny Spinoso and Sarah Nachin send our condolences to Rebecca. We have wonderful memories of our stay at their Bed and Breakfast - Beds on Clouds in 2017. Susumu prepared such delicious breakfasts. He was an amazing photographer. I purchased two of his works - a French flower flag photograph that I gave to a friend in France and his signature Windham Camel photo. He will be missed by his friends, the Windham community and, indeed the whole world. Below is an excerpt from an article I wrote for the Mountain Eagle/Windham Weekly newspaper in 2017 which was about immigrants who have settled in the Catskill region.
"Susumu Sato and Rebecca Segestorm could not have grown up in more disparate ways or from more different cultures. Since they met in 1979 the husband and wife have been a team. Currently , they own and operate Beds on Clouds Bed and Breakfast Inn, a B & B in downtown Windham. It also serves as a gallery for Susumu's artistic photographs.
Rebecca was born in Königsberg, East Prussia which was formerly a region of Germany, but is now part of Russia. She became a professional dancer and after meeting her American husband moved to the United States in 1972.
Susumu, a native of Sapporo, Japan studied at the Tokyo College of Photography before emigrating to the United States to continue his studies in New York City.
Rebecca and Susumu started a very successful advertising business. He worked with clients such as Pepsi-Cola and Rolling Rock Beer and won a Clio Award for his efforts . He has photographed famous people such as Andy Warhol and Hillary Clinton and his photographs have appeared on the covers of many magazines.
In 1992, the two began an ambitious project called “Flower Power: Flags of the World.“ They took freshly-cut flowers and placed them in the designs of various flags. Then Susumu photographed them. They presented one of the first photographs, a United States flag, to George H.W. Bush. Now they sell prints of the flag photographs in their gallery.
How did they happen to move from the bustling metropolis of New York City to the small town of Windham?
Rebecca explains it this way. “We came here by accident, literally. In 2001 we were involved in a car accident in Manhattan and decided to move out of the city.”
They bought an 19th century home in Windham and converted it to a bed and breakfast. They opened in 2003. Among Susumu's tasks is preparing the delicious gourmet breakfasts. He continues to take artistic photographs and is currently working on a project called Susumu Sato's Eternal Snow Images of the Northern Catskills©.
Rebecca manages the day-to-day operations of the inn and the gallery. It was a big undertaking and continues to be a challenge but one that they tackle enthusiastically."
