Dear Truesdell family,
We would like to offer our deepest condolences. Although you do not know us we wanted to reach out to your family. We were on the trail at the time of Garys passing and we just wanted to let you know that he was not alone. Strangers were fighting for him and more importantly his friends fought for him. Especially Luke. Luke held Garys head in his final moments and fought for his life until the end. Seeing someone fight so hard for someone else speaks to the man Gary must have been. Hearing the young woman from the EMS say he was her uncle and that “he died in the place he loved” gives us some comfort. It was our first time at Bearpen and we can see why Gary loved it so much. We will think of him every time we return. We did not know Gary but we wish we had gotten the chance to. We wish there was more we could have done for him. We mourn him and our thoughts are with your family at this difficult time.
With sympathy,
Frank Betro

This was my reply
Frank and Emily,
Thank you so much for reaching out. This is his daughter Sandra. My father was a very special person to me, and several others in this world. For you to lend a helping hand and reach out to us during this most difficult time means more than you know. Your actions embody everything that he stood for as a person. He would help anyone at any time. I’m sure he would have enjoyed getting to know you as well. We would like you to be at piece with the events of that day. He has had several Major heart attacks in the past. There was little anyone could have done. He died on the mountain overlooking the family farm where he's lived his entire life. As fate would have it, Me and my son were able to speak with him via FaceTime minutes before he passed. We are grateful for everything both of you did and thank you for your kindness. -Sandra
Thank you so much again for the email. It really means a lot to me that you took the time to reach out.
Their reply
It was a beautiful thing to read about the family man that he was. We will always feel a connection to him and be reminded how precious life is. I reached out to my own Dad after and I’m so glad you and your son had that phone call with him. Hoping Luke too finds peace and comfort knowing he did all the right things. We will be back to finish Bearpen and will pour one out for Gary.
If you would like to email them please private message me.

Wow, where to begin? I met Gary in 1974 when I, along with two friends, moved into a farmhouse in Grand Gorge. He was a funny kid (we were like 5-7 years older) and a treat to be around. Several years later I married a Brooklyn girl, worked & resided there, then later bought land and built a house on Vinegar Hill In Lexington...only to discover that the Truesdell farm was right down the hill. We were delighted to strike up a close friendship with Gary. Often during late fall and early winter when we were not yet living full time on the mountaintop, knowing we’d be arriving late on Friday nights, Gary (who had a set of our keys) would go up to our place, turn on the lights, warm the house with a fire in the wood stove and leave a pile of firewood next to it for us. We remember the times he’d show up with baggies of the biggest blackberries we ever saw to share, or a bit of ginseng and the invites to the barn at milking time for chocolate milk. We remember our friend, who more than once gifted us a few days ahead of Thanksgiving with fully dressed, ready for the oven wild turkeys along with a chuckle and a warning to watch out for buckshot! Gary was always cheerful with a big toothy smile full of hearty laughs and giggles...and we never, ever met anyone who worked as hard as he did. We could go on and on...we have so many fond & cherished memories of him. He was an amazing person through and through, an inspiration to life. It was such an honor and privilege to know this kind, generous, thoughtful man. The world has lost a true gem and heaven has gained a smiling angel. Our sincerest sympathy to Barbara, Sandy, GaryGene and the entire extended Truesdell clan.

Gary was great, we had a lot of fun growing up together. Same Grand Gorge Central class. Swimming in the creek, jumping off the bridge, teaching me how to milk cows and feed the cats at the same time. If we were splitting wood, tossing hay on the trailer, we worked hard, but we had fun doing it. We played soccer together and partied to much. Great guy, it’s been years since I’ve visited from Florida. My condolences to his family and friends.

Gary was a wonderful person, whom I knew for only three years. He always made me laugh, and always, always, always had a huge smile to share. He brought carrots to my horses, just because he wanted to, and was so kind. He was always willing to help, to do the extra bit, to offer more. When he would come to feed my horses, after I had an accident and broke my shoulder, he would have his beautiful grandchildren with him, who seemed delighted for the adventure. George the dog would run around, and the boys would help Gary with the hay. He brought a calf over once, who licked his ear and made him laugh. I'm so sorry for the family, for your loss. I will miss him, and I'm so grateful I got to know him, even for a short time.
