Obituary of William A. Poehmel
William "Bill" A. Poehmel, Sr., 82, of Windham, New York, was called to eternal rest on May 8, 2024. He was born on December 31, 1941, in Queens, New York, to the late Lawrence and Sally Poehmel. Bill was a cherished member of the Windham community and a steadfast presence in the local construction industry.
A man of great skill, Bill dedicated many years of service as a Heavy Equipment Operator with IO & A Slutzky, a Snowmaking Foreman at Hunter Mountain, and a dedicated worker in Golf Course Maintenance at Onteora Park. His hard work and expertise left a significant mark on the landscape and the hearts of those he worked with. Bill's warmth and generosity knew no bounds, and his devotion to his family was unwavering. A true outdoorsman, he found joy in boating, fishing, hunting, and camping—embracing the beauty of nature that surrounded him.
A patriarch in truest form, Bill's legacy is honored by his children, William Poehmel, Jr. (Stacy), James Poehmel (Haily), Laura Poehmel (Rich), Anthony Poehmel (Joanna); his adored grandchildren, Alaina Proudman (Kyle), Jordan Poehmel (Julia), Connor Poehmel and Madison Poehmel; Braden, Anthony, and Amaya Poehmel. His treasured great-grandchildren, Riley Clum, Gunner, and Waylon Proudman. Survived by his sisters, Carol Schiefer and Sally Saracino. Bill will be missed by his many friends, who were more like family. He leaves behind a legacy of love and many fond memories.
Bill reunites in God's embrace with his beloved wife, Ruth Ann Poehmel, and his siblings, Edith Neckels, Lucille O'Mara, Lawrence, James, and John Poehmel, who predeceased him.
Those who knew Bill will recall his immense heart and the kindness he extended to all. His legacy is one of warmth, generosity, and the enduring love he had for his family and friends. The Poehmel family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Columbia Memorial Hospital, in Hudson, New York, for their compassionate care.
Bill's life will be honored and remembered in a gathering of family and friends. Calling hours will be held Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral Service at Decker Funeral Home on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 12:00 p.m., graveside service immediately following at Maplewood Cemetery in Hunter, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's memory to the American Lung Association.
