Obituary of Violet I. Mead

Hunter, NY - It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Violet Irene (Becker) “Gigi” Mead, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Violet departed this life on 22 December 2023 at the Margaretville Mountainside Residential Care Center comforted by her family, new-found friends and loving caregivers.

Violet was predeceased by her husband, Clayton "Junior" Mead, who shared a lifetime of love and companionship with her. Together, they faced life's challenges and celebrated its joys, leaving a lasting legacy of devotion for their family.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Robert Allen Mead, two brothers, two sisters, sons-in-law, Robert Schertl, and George R. Loucks, and grandson, Robert “Bobby” Schertl. Violet faced these losses with strength and resilience, finding solace in the memories and the enduring bonds of family.

Violet was born on 16 July 1925 in Hunter, NY to William (Jack) McKinley Becker and Mildred May (Brownhill) Becker.  Hunter, NY was her forever home – this is where she grew up, raised a family and built a life filled with love, joy, and cherished moments. Her working-life journey began at the Dress Factory and at the Corner Restaurant, both in downtown Hunter, NY.  Later, she worked in the electronics industry at Ferroxcube in Saugerties, NY. Together, Violet and Junior purchased Mead’s Mobile and ran the business for many years until their retirement and subsequent snow-bird escapades in Brooksville, FL.  In her later years Violet ventured between living with one daughter or the other, dependent upon whichever one was providing the most excitement at the time.  Violet will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, supporting her grandson Bobby’s passion for ham radios and hiking, her wry smile and the infamous picture on her son-in-law’s motorcycle.

Violet is survived by her loving daughters, Bonnie Schertl and Barbara Loucks, adopted daughter, Gina Chun, grandchildren, Kevin Loucks (Kristin) and Brian Loucks (Lindsay), and great-grandchildren Cade, Paige, Ellie, Aidan, Hannah, Ethan, and Sadie. She leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories that will be cherished by her family and friends for generations to come.

In addition to her immediate family, Violet is mourned by a host of relatives and friends who were touched by her love, generosity, and wisdom.

A remembrance service will be held at the Margaretville Mountainside Residential Care Center on Thursday, 25 January 2024. Additionally, a memorial service to celebrate Violet's life will be held in the Spring in Hunter, NY on a date and time to be determined. The family invites friends and well-wishers to join them in honoring Violet's memory and sharing stories of her remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Columbia-Greene Humane Society, 111 Humane Society Road, Hudson, NY 12534-3400, a cause dear to Violet's heart.

Violet Mead will be dearly missed but forever remembered as a source of inspiration and love. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her loved ones who went before her.
