Obituary of Joyce Tompkins
H. Joyce Tompkins, born May 12, 1925 to Raymond and Margaret Enderlin, died April 24, 2021. She married Robert M. Tompkins on September 9, 1945, celebrating sixty-eight years when Bob died in 2013. They spent their life together on the dairy farm. Fire destroyed the original barn in the 50’s, they rebuilt, then lost that barn and livestock to another fire in the 70s. Moving forward, the couple started a gravel bank business on their mountain.
Joyce was the mother of five children, Larry (Donna) Nancy, JoAnne, Rich (Randi) and Don, eight grandchildren, sixteen great grand children and three great great grandchildren. Raising five kids, being a farm wife, helping with chores and field work, she was also active in her Ashland Community Church, the WSCS, she was a member of the UMW, the Ashland Fire Department and the WAJPL Golden Agers, and quilting at the church. Her life was also about friendship and service to others, giving rides to appointments, providing meals to shut ins, helping with church, election, and fire dept. dinners. At home, Joyce always had room at the table, especially to celebrate holidays. In retirement, Bob and Joyce purchased a motorhome and motored about the country, spending several winters in California and Arizona. Joyce was a caregiver to her mother, mother in law, an aunt then cared for her husband.
