Obituary of Alvena Hitchcock

Alvena Mae Hitchcock, 103, of East Jewett, New York died peacefully in The Pines on Sunday, March 7, 2021.  She was born Jan. 9, 1918 in East Jewett, NY to the late Merritt and Marguerite DeLong and lived in the home she was born in for 101 years. She was married to Elwood Hitchcock who passed away on Jan. 10, 2004.

 

Alvena was an amazing person.  She attended a one-room school house in East Jewett and in 8th grade transferred to WAJ Central School graduating in 1934. Went on with her best friend, Ruth Thompson Stevens, and graduated from Albany State in 1938.  On August 18, 1938 she married her husband who had been her 8th grade teacher.

 

Alvena was a Sunday School teacher, organist in her Methodist Church, Member of the DAR for over 50 years, worked in the East Jewett Willing Workers, secretary to her husband typing the East Jewett Items, three of his books, and his many sermons.  She was devoted to her family, and read her Bible everyday.   She loved sitting by her 100 year old Glenwood stove in the kitchen and reading her mother’s diaries.

 

Alvena is survived by her son Thomas and wife Lonna of East Jewett, Daughter Linda and husband James of East Jewett and daughter Susan Neugebauer of Melbourne, FL.  Grandchilden are Kathy Marino, Peter Varelas, Christina Kraszewski, Rebecca Nelson, Andrew Hitchcock and Alison Hitchcock.  Great grandchildren Leanna, Nicholas, Joseph Marino, Lindy, Michael, Catherine Nelson, Jack, and Emma Kraszewski and Valerie and Lincoln Hitchcock

 

 

In addition to her husband and her parents, she is predeceased by her son Lt. Willam E Hitchcock in 1965, Son-in-Law Hans Neugebauer in 2020, and brothers Douglas and Merrill DeLong, sister Beatrice Saunders.

 

A  private grave side service will he held in the spring.
