Obituary of Dorothy Rose Podwinski

On Tuesday, January 28, 2020, Dorothy Schoen Podwinski, 92, slipped peacefully from her earthly home into the Presence of her Lord Jesus Christ. She was a loving wife, and a devoted Mom, Grandma, and GG to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Dorothy was born on August 5, 1927 in Jersey City, NJ to George and Anna (Peterson) Schoen. She graduated from Bogota High School in 1944 and employed as a secretary at Republic D/L Company from July 1944-July 1951. She married Edward Podwinski on April 29, 1950. Ed and Dot raised two daughters, Nancy and Ellyn, and one son, Edward. Dorothy’s greatest joy was her family and she poured her heart and soul into their happiness and success. She loved travelling with her husband and grandchildren and entertaining her friends and family. She served as Treasurer of the E Roy Bixby PTA & Student Loan Association, a Library Volunteer, a Girl Scout leader, and a Sunday School teacher. She was a faithful attender of Glad Tidings Tabernacle in NYC, Hawthorne Gospel Church in Hawthorne, NJ, Hensonville Methodist Church and Mitchell Hollow Mission Church in Windham, NY, and Emerson Bible Church in Emerson, NJ. She was a knitter, recipe clipper, and crock pot/ casserole queen. She was caregiver to 4 elderly family members during her lifetime, giving unselfishly of her time and generously of her love. She was known for her many Bible questions, her wise advice and generous encouragement, her ready smile, her inquiring mind, her passion for mysteries, and her love for God and people. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Edward. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Nancy and Daniel Miles, Ellyn and Carl Zizzo, Edward and Deborah (Ruskowsky) Podwin, her grandchildren Laura and Michael Blass, Matthew and Rebecca (Older) Miles, Carolyn and Mathew Yarossi, Jared Zizzo, Brett and Stephanie (Valdez) Zizzo, Craig Zizzo, Annalisa Podwin, Gabriele Podwin, Jonathan Podwin, Kristina Podwin, and her great grandchildren Anna, Samuel, Elisia, Joshua, Spencer, Gavin, Chelsea, Peter and Dorothy as well as several sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Dorothy’s life is planned in the spring. Decker Funeral Home in Windham, NY will be handling the arrangements.
