Obituary of George Korinek
With heavy hearts we regretfully announce the passing of George Korinek on January 18th, 2020. He passed away peacefully at his home in Windham at the age of 92.
George was born on July 8th, 1927 in Jicin, Czech Republic where he graduated from high school. He went on to study at Charles University in Prague. With the Communist takeover in 1948, George made a harrowing escape to the West landing in Canada. After working as a lumberjack and in a nickel smelter, he enrolled at the University of British Columbia where he earned a doctorate in chemistry and metallurgy. For the next 40 years George worked for metals and pharmaceutical companies in the New York area and Switzerland.
A resident of Windham for the past 40 years, George fully enjoyed the nature and healthy lifestyle of the local area. Often he could be seen biking on the country roads, hiking on the Windham trails or skiing on Windham mountain.
George lived life to its fullest and his warmth and sense of humor will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He leaves behind his wife Gisela of Windham; his daughters Lisa of Toronto, Canada and Jane of Paris, France; and, his grandchildren Rayan Kezouit, Milan Kezouit, Sarah Ravoth and Jesse Ravoth. George was predeceased by his father Frantisek, his mother Maria and his brothers Frank and Miroslav.
A gathering to celebrate George’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 29th from 4-6 pm at the Ze wine bar in Windham.
