Bruce D. Knox, 89, of Ashland, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2026, at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Home, Albany, N.Y. He was born on February 28, 1937 in Ashland, NY in the farmhouse, to the late David and Alice Knox. He was a loving husband and widower of Janice M. Knox, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage in Ashland, N.Y.


Bruce attended the one-room schoolhouse on Sutton Hollow Road before going to WAJ Central School to finish 1st grade.  Bruce left WAJ in his junior year to help at home on the farm as his mother had health problems. Bruce was called to active duty in the United Stated Army in 1960 and served in the military police stationed in Germany and also finished his schooling (GED) while serving. He served for 2 years in the Cold War. He returned back to work for Greene County Highway Department.  He worked for them from 1957 to 1991 then took an early retirement at 55 with N.Y. State after 34 ½ years. After retirement, he spent his winters in Florida with Janice, raised beef cattle, hayed the farm. 


Bruce enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.  He also was an avid hunter; he had several 8 pointers. He enjoyed his 4-wheeler, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. He loved his antique cars and tractors. He loved videoing with his camcorder, pictures of wildlife and the grandkids. 


He was a Lifetime Member of the Ashland Fire Department, joined in 1960. He served as the Rescue Squad Captain for Ashland and served as Fire Police for Ashland and Greene County.


He was a member of V.F.W. and American Legion. He was the AFSCME Union President for the Greene County Highway Department for 20 years. He served on the Ashland Planning Board.


He was predeceased by his wife Janice Knox, mother Alice Knox, father David Knox and brother Robert Knox.


He is survived by his 2 children, a son David (Carol) Knox and a daughter Tina (Joe) Meehan, 2 wonderful grandchildren Amanda Meehan (Jimmy McGrath) and Patrick Meehan (Abby Inglee), a precious Great Grandson Rylan McGrath and sister-in-law Leona Knox.


Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 pm on Friday March 27th, at Decker Funeral Home, a Fire Company Service will take place at 7PM.  Burial with Military Honors BURIAL WILL BE ON SATURDAY MAY 9, 2026 at 1PM, Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland,NY.


Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Fire Department.
