Peter J. Figiel Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter Joseph Figiel, affectionately known as Pete or "Mr. Pete," who peacefully departed this world on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in the Bronx, New York, on November 11, 1955, Peter was a man whose warmth, humor, and unwavering spirit filled every room he entered, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Peter's devotion to his family was immeasurable. He was the beloved husband of Jeanine Figiel and the proud father of three sons, Peter (Alyssa), Anthony (Colleen), and James (Shelby). He was the heart of his family, a role he cherished, and the proudest "Poppi" to his seven grandchildren: Petrino, Gia, Teddie, Romee, Rocky, Briar, and Parker. His love and guidance will forever shape their lives.

From his humble beginnings, opening his first garage Gun Hill II at the young age of 19, Peter exemplified hard work and determination. In 1987, he brought his family to Hunter, New York, where he established Pete's Mobil, a place that became much more than just a repair shop. It was a cornerstone of the community, where he forged lasting friendships, offered second chances, and became a beloved fixture in the lives of so many. Peter's commitment to his craft led him to expand his business in 2005, solidifying a legacy of service that his sons now proudly continue at Pete’s Auto.

In addition to his beloved wife, sons, and grandchildren, he is survived by his siblings, Steven Figiel (Vicki) and their daughter Emily (Jared), Paul Figiel (preceded in death by wife Lisa), Christopher Figiel (Gail Owens), and Cathy Merigliano (Frank) and their children Frank Jr. and Josie.

He will also be deeply missed by Jeanine's sister, Danielle Nicoletti (Gerard), and their children, Gerard Jr. and Jenna.

Peter found joy in the simple things: a strong cup of black coffee (perhaps with a touch of sambuca), the thrill of a casino gamble, and the warmth of a home-cooked Sunday pasta dinner. He nurtured a love for gardening, a fondness for his chickens, and a talent for entertaining, particularly when riding on the back of his tow truck in the local parade.

A dedicated Yankees fan and cooking show enthusiast, Peter was, above all, the glue that held his tight-knit, fiercely loyal family together.

Beyond his business and family, Peter selflessly served as a volunteer member of the Hunter Fire Department, giving back to the community he held so dear.

In his shop, customers became friends, and friends became family. Many lingered for hours, sharing stories and laughter.

Peter's life was a testament to grit, humor, and an open heart, all of which he generously shared with everyone he encountered.

While his presence will be profoundly missed, Peter's love, laughter, and legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during calling hours on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 2 pm to 7 pm at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church, located at 5188 State Route 23, Windham, NY 12496

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10 am at the same location, followed by interment at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Pete's memory to the Hunter Fire Department, 17 Bridge St, Hunter, NY 12442.
