Obituary of Jean C. Maher

Jean Cruickshank Maher, a woman of vibrant spirit and boundless energy, peacefully departed this world on February 19th, after a long and fulfilling life. Her journey took her from the leafy streets of Forest Hills, NY, to the serene landscapes of Garden City, NY, the tranquil woods of Big Indian, NY, the sunny shores of Palm City, Florida, and finally, the picturesque mountains of Windham, NY.

Born on December 30th, 1927, in Forest Hills, NY, to Robert and Helen Cruickshank, Jean's childhood was filled with adventure and joy. Her summers in Big Indian, NY, held a special place in her heart, where she shared countless hours of horseback riding and hiking with her beloved sister, Sara Ann, and brother, Bobby. After graduating from Sacred Heart School in NYC, she pursued her passion for art at the Franklin School of Design in NYC.

In 1953, a chance seating at a mutual friend's bridge tournament sparked a lifelong romance,  Jean married Edward “Bob” Maher. Together, they built a loving home and raised five “card playing” children: Edward (Mary Anne), Robert, Michael (Cathy), Paul (Kate), and Sheila (Greg). She often started her day sharing her breakfast with her loved English setter, Duchess before rangling the kids off to school.    At times, taking in “additional”  children  into the family home.   Jean treasured her role as a mother, and her family expanded to include eleven grandchildren, who brought her immense joy.

Once her children were grown, Jean returned to her passion for art and education. She began teaching art at St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hempstead, NY, sharing her love with young students. She later earned her Bachelor's degree in Art Education and a Master's in Education from Adelphi University.

Upon retirement, Jean and Bob embraced their adventurous spirits, embarking on numerous travels around the globe. They played golf in Ireland, rode camels at the Great Pyramids, and explored the breathtaking fjords of Scandinavia. Jean was also an avid athlete, enjoying skiing, tennis, and golf. A lifelong Mets fan, she followed her team with unwavering enthusiasm.

Jean was an artist, a dedicated teacher, and a cherished friend to many. Her warm smile and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She lived a life filled with passion, adventure, and love, with no regrets.
